You’ve shaken hands. The price is set. The relief is real. Then someone walks you into the finance and insurance office — and the deal starts growing again.

This is where dealerships generate serious profit. Paint protection packages, VIN etching, extended warranties, gap insurance, tire protection plans, maintenance bundles, and a category of charges sometimes labeled only as “dealer preparation.” Some of these products have genuine value depending on your situation. Most of them can be purchased elsewhere for less, or skipped entirely. They’re introduced at the precise moment you’re most exhausted and most willing to say yes just to be done.

Slow down exactly when the room is asking you to speed up.

Review every line of the final paperwork. Ask plainly whether each charge is mandatory or optional before you sign. Anything listed as optional is, by definition, a choice — and no one in that room is going to volunteer that reminder.
