Twenty Dollars, Three Weeks, No Explanation

Three weeks in a row, the boy asked for twenty dollars. Three weeks in a row, his father said no — assumed video games, assumed junk food. The fourth week, he followed him.

The boy walked to the corner store, bought a specific hand cream and a pair of warm socks, then took them to the elderly woman who sold flowers outside the train station every morning. The same woman his father walked past every single day without stopping. Her hands were cracked from the cold. The boy had noticed. She held his face in both hands when he gave them to her.

That evening the father handed him the twenty dollars and said it was for next week. The boy said: “She’s always there. Someone should notice.”

The Missing Coat

Three days before she asked. Three days of the hook being empty, the coat gone, no explanation offered. When she finally pressed her nine-year-old, the girl went quiet first.

There was a classmate who came to school every day without one. The daughter had been giving her coat to wear on the walk home each afternoon and collecting it back the next morning before her mother noticed. When asked why she hadn’t said anything, she said: “I didn’t want you to make it a big deal.”

Her mother bought two coats the next day. Her daughter made her promise not to tell anyone.
