She Finished a Triathlon Three Years After Doctors Said She Had Months

The Chart on Her Wall

She made a “Weeks to Live” chart. Not a countdown. A record of time as something worth marking, not just enduring. Alongside it, she built a living list: experiences to chase, moments to collect. Watching her son walk into his first kindergarten classroom. A triathlon.

On Instagram, she started sharing the unfiltered version of her life: a mother with incurable cancer who also argues with her kids about screen time and burns dinner and cries in parking lots. Over 400,000 people follow her there now, drawn to something that doesn’t perform wellness or fake resolution.

Three Years and a Finish Line

In 2024, on the third anniversary of the day she was given months to live, Michelle Hughes swam, biked, and ran a half-marathon. She crossed the triathlon finish line upright, surrounded by her children, under her own power.
