The Letter That Never Got an Address

Every year, without fail, an envelope arrives. No card. Just a twenty-dollar bill and a grandfather’s handwriting on the outside. The girl is eleven now. Her mother and her grandfather don’t speak — the mother’s choice, still the right one. Her daughter knows there’s a grandfather somewhere, knows they don’t talk, has never pushed on why.

This year she asked if she could write him a thank-you note. Four sentences. She handed it to her mother to address.

That envelope has been sitting on the kitchen counter for three months. The address hasn’t been looked up. The mother knows exactly why she hasn’t.

The Dinner Nobody Was Warned About

It wasn’t accidental. One of the guests confirmed it later: the neighbor had done it on purpose. She’s never said so herself. Never taken any credit.

Three of them walk together on Tuesday mornings now. The neighbor doesn’t join them. She’s never been asked, never offered. She seems to consider the job finished, which is its own thing to carry.
