Buses Go Everywhere Planes Don’t

Trains skip most of Thailand. Buses don’t. The local network reaches every corner of the country, and fares are low — though the experience involves blasting A/C, Thai action movies at wall-shaking volume, and frequent stops to collect passengers from the roadside. Tell the driver exactly where you’re going. Stations often have no signage whatsoever.

Tourist buses are a different animal. More expensive, but they run point-to-point between popular destinations, pick you up from your guesthouse, drop you off in the tourist district at the other end, and often bundle ferry tickets for island routes — Bangkok to Ko Phi Phi in one booking, no scrambling between terminals. For long overnight hauls, they’re worth the premium.

Travel agents throughout tourist areas sell tourist bus tickets. Walk in, tell them where you’re headed, they’ll sort it. No reservation portal required.

Two Wheels Beat Four Every Time

Don’t rent a car. Roads in Thailand are aggressive, and the driving culture takes serious adjustment. Car rentals start at 700–800 THB per day, expensive relative to everything else here. A motorbike rents for 150–400 THB per day, handles traffic better, and opens up tracks that cars can’t reach.

The caveats are real. Motorbike accidents in Thailand are common — genuinely common, not fine-print common. Ride only if you’re already comfortable on one. Never drink and ride. Wear a helmet. Hospital stays abroad cost far more than the cheap daily rate that made the whole idea seem appealing in the first place.
