TRAVELHow to Never Pay United Airlines Baggage Fees Again4 min read

The Bag That Could Cost You $25 at the Gate

United Airlines has two kinds of passengers: those who know the baggage rules cold, and those who get hit with surprise fees at the gate. The difference between them is usually about ten minutes of homework before booking.

Start with carry-ons. Every passenger gets a personal item — backpack, purse, laptop bag, pet carrier — capped at 9 by 17 by 10 inches. That goes under the seat in front of you, no charge, no argument. Most tickets also include a full-size carry-on up to 22 by 14 by 9 inches in the overhead bin, also free.

The exception is basic economy. Book that fare and United allows the personal item only. Show up at the gate dragging a roller bag anyway and you’ll pay the standard checked bag fee plus an extra $25 gate surcharge. That’s not a typo. A fare chosen to save $30 can instantly cost more than a standard ticket.

What Checked Bags Actually Cost

For flights within North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, United charges general members $40 for the first checked bag and $50 for the second. Prepay online at least 24 hours before departure and you shave $5 off each of the first two bags — except on flights to Canada, where the discount doesn’t apply.

Elite status changes the math dramatically. Premier Silver members fly with a free first bag. Premier Gold and above get both the first and second bag free. Premier Platinum and 1K members also waive fees on a third bag. Star Alliance Gold cardholders get at least one free first checked bag on all United-operated flights regardless of home airline.

Weight matters too. Economy passengers without elite status are capped at 50 pounds per bag. Elite members and anyone traveling in premium cabins get 70 pounds before fees kick in. Go over that and United stacks an overweight fee on top of whatever you’re already paying. Oversize bags — anything exceeding standard dimensions — get their own separate fee. The charges compound fast.
