The Three and a Half Minute Lie

In 2022, Florida resident Amanda Ramirez sued the Kraft Heinz Company over what the box said about Velveeta microwavable mac and cheese. “Ready in 3½ Minutes,” the packaging claimed. Ramirez said that was false advertising, because the 3.5 minutes covered only the microwave step — not opening the container, stirring, or waiting for the cheese sauce to thicken. She sought $5 million.

Kraft called the lawsuit frivolous. Judge Beth Bloom agreed, dismissing the case on July 27, 2023. Her ruling included a detail that cut the legs out from under the whole claim: there was no evidence Ramirez had ever actually tried to make the product. The mac and cheese won, undefeated.
