The Points Side of the Equation

Cash fares aren’t the only thing getting cheaper. That same Long Beach–Maui round-trip drops from nearly 35,000 Rapid Rewards points to 24,395 points plus $11.20 in taxes and fees. A 30% cut on award redemptions is unusual — most sales skip the points side entirely. Southwest didn’t skip it.

Oakland to Honolulu is another strong option. Round-trips are available from 23,231 Rapid Rewards points, or $351.89 in cash. Both are solid numbers for a mainland-to-Hawaii flight.

If you’re booking with a credit card that earns bonus points on airfare purchases, stack that on top of the discount. The booking deadline is Thursday, December 5 — after that, the code expires and prices reset. Don’t wait on this one.
