CLEAR vs. TSA PreCheck — The Real Difference

TSA PreCheck costs $78 for five years and covers more than 200 airports. CLEAR costs $199.95 a year and covers 58. On paper, PreCheck looks like the obvious winner. But the programs solve different problems. PreCheck speeds up the physical screening — no shoes, no liquids out, no laptop removal. CLEAR speeds up the identity verification step that happens before you even reach the belt.

PreCheck also has a catch: it only works on participating airlines, and TSA occasionally routes non-members into the PreCheck lane when it’s understaffed, which bogs down the line. CLEAR works regardless of which airline you’re flying, and the lane stays members-only. One program makes screening faster; the other makes the whole experience more predictable.

There’s also a newer feature called Reserve powered by CLEAR, available at 20 airports across the U.S., Canada, and Europe, which lets you book a timed entry slot through security based on your departure. Think of it as a reservation for your own punctuality.

What It Costs — and How to Pay Less

The standard CLEAR Plus membership runs $199.95 per year. That’s the number most people see and stop reading. But there are enough discount paths that paying full price is almost a choice you make by not looking.

Delta SkyMiles members get tiered pricing based on status. United MileagePlus members have their own rate structure. Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan members get discounts too. Each program has different numbers attached to status levels — the short version is that if you’re loyal to one of these carriers, you’re likely paying less than sticker price.

Several credit cards reimburse up to $199 in CLEAR Plus membership costs per year as a travel credit — including some Amex cards. Referrals earn two free months per friend you bring in. And CLEAR offers a two-month trial for new members. The math is worth doing before you dismiss it as too expensive.
