The Line You Didn’t Know Existed

Most travelers treat airport security like a fact of life — the shuffling queue, the bins, the fluorescent purgatory. But off to the side of nearly every major U.S. airport checkpoint, there’s a separate lane moving at a completely different speed. That’s CLEAR. And 17 million Americans are already using it.

CLEAR Plus is a biometric identity platform operating at 58 U.S. airports, plus stadiums and large venues. Instead of handing a TSA agent your driver’s license, you walk up to a kiosk, press your fingers to a scanner or look into an iris reader, and a CLEAR ambassador walks you to the front of the security line. The whole thing takes roughly 90 seconds.

It doesn’t replace the X-ray belt or the body scanner — you still remove your shoes and send your bag through. What it eliminates is the document-checking bottleneck, the part where one TSA agent is managing two lines and the guy ahead of you can’t find his boarding pass.

How the Biometrics Actually Work

At enrollment, CLEAR collects your fingerprints and a scan of your irises — two data points that are yours alone and don’t change. Every time you fly, you authenticate at a kiosk in about five seconds. No ID needed. No fumbling through your bag. The system confirms who you are, and a staff member escorts you past the document-check queue entirely.

TSA can still pull you aside for a random ID check — that’s true for every traveler regardless of what programs they’re enrolled in. But CLEAR itself has no randomized exclusion system. Everyone in that lane is a member, everyone knows how it works, and the line moves.

If you also carry TSA PreCheck, the two stack perfectly. CLEAR gets you past the document line; PreCheck gets you into the expedited screening lane where you keep your shoes and laptop in your bag. Used together, security becomes almost frictionless. Without PreCheck, you’ll still clear the identity step fast but join the standard screening queue after.
